Gina DeAngelis – Second Place Winner

In Gina DeAngelis’ prizewinning script THE KNOCKING AT THE MARSH, when her widowed mother vanishes during a blizzard in 1850s Virginia, a biracial teenager must defend herself, her vulnerable little sister, and their isolated farm against a predatory uncle and the torments of an angry spirit.

As our second place winner, Gina receives $1,000 and reduced tuition to attend this year’s feature retreat.

Gina DeAngelis is the youngest of 10 kids who all talked at once. She started writing just to get a word in. A professional writer for 20+ years, she won an Emmy Award for historical drama, and holds Master’s degrees in both history and screenwriting. Whether in family-friendly adventures or R-rated thrillers, her unlikely heroes suffer from estrangement and isolation, but build diverse found families. Even her darkest stories are ultimately life-affirming. Recent releases include 13 documentary shorts (STORIES OF WAR), an indie feature premiering in 2023, and the horror/thriller short ASK FOR HELP. Her work has also appeared on PBS and was performed live for Queen Elizabeth II.

Liz Fields – Third Place Winner

In Liz Fields’ prizewinning script BELONGING, a spirited young adoptee, who couldn’t care less about her Chinese roots, hatches a plan to find her birth family for the sake of her college scholarship essay; connecting to her heritage is optional, but NYU is non-negotiable.

As our third place winner, Liz receives $750 and reduced tuition to attend this year’s feature retreat.

Liz Fields is an Asian-Australian-American writer and filmmaker who draws inspiration for screenplays from the stranger-than-fiction situations she’s encountered as an award-winning journalist. Liz previously worked at ABC News and VICE, where she interviewed everyone from drug dealers and priests to spies and insurgent groups; and somehow survived the 2016 elections as a campaign embed. She has since written and produced content for HBO, Netflix, Hulu, PBS, and more. A 2022 graduate of the CAPE New Writer’s Program, Liz signed with Zero Gravity Management after placing as a finalist in AFF’s script competition two years in a row.
